On November 6^th 2006, Jorge Gómez Manzano, brother of prisoner of opinion René Gómez Manzano, presented a request to Sala de Delitos contra la Seguridad del Estado, of the Tribunal Provincial de Ciudad in La Habana, for Habeas Corpus, in order to get his release.

Background : Attorney René Gomez Manzano and the independent Journalist Roberto de Jesus Guerra were arrested one year ago, on July 22, 2005 while an activity was being held outside the French Embassy in Havana. René Gomez Manzano was arrested in his home for he was not participating in the activity. (For more : See : idhae-uk-page4.1.cub4.htm)

RECOMMENDED ACTION:

Please send telegrams/telexes/faxes/express/ airmail letters:

- urging that Rene Gomez Manzano be immediately and unconditionally released, on the grounds that they are prisoners of conscience, detained solely for peacefully exercising their rights to freedom of expression, association and assembly;

- urging to respect freedom of expression and freedom of association and to immediately release all of those imprisoned for their efforts to promote basic human rights in Cuba.

- asking the authorities to conform to the provisions of the Declaration on Humans Rights Defenders, adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations on December 9, 1998, in particular article 1, which states that "everyone has the right, individually or in association with others, to promote the protection and realization of human rights and fundamental freedoms at the national and international levels";
